SLICED LOTUS DRESS

Melbourne International Flower & Garden show in Royal Exhibition building, 2015

I am exploring emergence as a natural transformation of growth and decay. I was inspired by the first quote which comes from the book Life, Paint and Passion. “When a seed sprouts, it’s a violent process. The skin breaks and splits in two. Something dies and something is born. Anything you paint a strong or violent image, you may be expressing that part of yourself that’s opening in order to let the new emerge.”  I really want the garment can become a strong image that shows the energy of alive and dead, just like an artwork. I decided to use sliced lotus and gradient color to show the whole circle of alive and decay.

Lotus is a process of growth and decay.  Lotus root—lotus ---lotus pod---lotus seed---lotus. Lotus can be reproduced by either lotus root or seed, it is said that lotus seed can survive more than thousand years and it still can reproduce lotus. I want to use sliced lotus to show this natural transformation by using contrast colour. Besides, most people think the fridge sliced lotus has already ‘dead’, but I think it still alive. It looks like a sponge keep drinking water which takes a long time to dry. When it dries, it absorbs the colour and looks great. During the process, I seem like witnessed the whole process of sliced lotus from alive and dead.
