ABYSS

RMIT, MELBOURE, 2015

The body site I chose is cheek. It is probably because I have a baby face and when I smile, the cheek shows obviously. So I think the cheek reflects happiness on people’s face, which is lovely.

I started to do some experiments about the shape of how the cheek moves; I tried plump up and pull in and so on.

Because I studying corset elective, and I found the shape of the cheek looks like a bra shape, then I started to use dart manipulation to create different movement of cheek. I used steel to replace acetate and found this shape is repeating, so I took it off and develop. I made the same size and different size of the shape and applied on body.

In the end I’m interested in this one and made it into knit. At first I decided to make it as part of the garment, because it looks elegant and interesting on the shoulder, but inspired from these designers, I was thinking to make the shape much bigger and can be worn on the body since it is exhibition. As there are several holes, this garment is playful and allows audience to put their arms, heads, hands, legs in it by their own choice. Unlike these exhibitions, I want to encourage audience to have fun with the garment and understand my design more instead of just watching.
